DATA JOURNALISM TRAINING PROGRAM

1. Start level
Objectives
This course aims at training basic skills for
data journalism practice. The training focuses on working with spreadsheets
and making visualizations. Developing a new journalistic attitude aiming at
data driven story telling is a second goal of the training.
Format
Training takes 3-4 full days in a computer lab.
The training is hands-on. Examples of data sets and assignments are available
from a training folder in the cloud.
Content
The training consists of the following topics:

What is data journalism?
-
Finding data for a story
-
Downloading data, working with pdf’s, and
simple scrapping with Outwit Hub
-
Analyzing data with Excel: formula’s, ordering
and selecting, pivot tables and graphs
-
Visualizing data using Datawrapper
-
Mapping data with Google FT and QGIS
-
Turning data into a journalistic story
-
Individual project: practising skills and
turning analyzed data in a story with your own data set. Presentation at the
end of the training.
2. Advanced level
Objectives
This course aims at enhancing data journalism
skills. These skills ar derived from academic tools used for data analysis.
Statistics play an important role in this type of analysis. Introducing basic
statistical test, key figures and visualizations of statistics is the second
goal of this course.
Format
Training takes 3-4 full days in a computer lab.
The training is hands-on. Examples of data sets and assignments are available
from a training folder in the cloud.
Content
The training consists of the following topics:

Scraping data from multiple webpages, building
a scrape, and using Regex(regular
expressions) in Outwit Hub
-
Working with databases using SqLite in Firefox:
making data selections for analysis
-
Using Refine for cleaning data
-
Analyzing selected data with R project, focusing on R commander and basic statistics and visualizations in R studio
-
Working on individual projects
3. Social Network Analysis
Objectives
This training is an
introduction into the basic of social network analysis focusing on the most
important parameters for analyzing groups in the network. Showing the
importance of social network analyzing for journalism is a second goal of the
course.
Format
Training takes 2 full days in a computer lab.
The training is hands-on. Examples of data sets and assignments are available
from a training folder in the cloud.
Content
The training consists of the following topics:

What is social network analysis

Working with NodeXL
-
Social network analysis using data from Twitter
and Facebook

Working on individual projects
4. Survey: collecting your own data
Objectives
This course is an introduction to the use of
the sociological survey, an important tool to collect your own data.
Format
Training takes 2 full days in a computer lab.
The training is hands-on. Examples of data sets and assignments are available
from a training folder in the cloud.
Content

Introduction to the sociological research design
and the position of the survey technique

Designing a questionnaire

Collecting data using Google forms
-
Analysis of using Excel
-
Working on individual projects
